DAY1:Roppongi Academy Hills/DAY2:loftwork.inc

The second day of "Experience Design (XPD)" centered on workshops by the three speakers from the first day. Attendees chose which of the three speakers' workshops they were most interested in attending, and had their own practical experience. This was a day in which participants not only listened to presentations, but also used their own heads and hands to gain knowledge. Here, I will introduce the three companies which gave presentations in the afternoon session of Day 1.

NEC PC, Denso, & Humanyze The Three Companies' Practices

In the afternoon session, three companies currently engaged in data innovation (Denso, NEC PC, and Humanyze) took the podium. In their crosstalk with Loftwork Inc., they explained their practices with easy to understand examples. These three companies would be putting on the program for the second day workshops as well. I listened to the three companies' presentations with great interest, wondering which workshop to participate in during the second day.

NEC Personal Computers Masanobu Todome

NEC Personal Computers can boast of having the greatest domestic share of PCs, but Masanobu Todome was already considering the future beyond that. Originally, the goal of personal computing was to have our lifestyles continuously supported by computing power, but it has not reached that stage yet. NEC is engaged in research and development of the next generation UI necessary to bring about personal computing in the true sense of the term. This is the same company that, as part of the High Touch Project jointly managed with Loftwork Inc., had a Hackathonin January of this year. Furthermore, the theme for their Day 2 workshop would be "The Next Gen UI," a topic that I personally am deeply interested in!

Denso Toshiki Isogai

Denso is famous for developing and manufacturing automotive parts, but Toshiki Isogai is implementing a project related to food. He informed us that in 2012, Denso turned its attention to creating the lifestyle of the future by starting something called "Activities For Envisioning Our Future Society." One of the many ideas that came out of that was "agriculture." Their vision was not merely to use Denso's technological strength to develop agricultural equipment, but to engage in a big-picture effort to optimize food itself by also considering the future of agriculture and of the ecosystems surrounding it.As one part of that, Loftwork Inc. is using design, science, and technology to create the future of delicious vegetables in the「Denso Agri Lab」 Project.

Humanyze  Ben Waber 

Ben Waber of Humanyze is engaged in "People Analytics," a method which has gained prominence in recent years that quantitatively analyzes work environments to design organizations, increase productivity, etc. According to Waber, People Analytics is a method which analyzes quantitative data on communication and interaction to improve organizational issues such as team sales, productivity, employee satisfaction, and so on. In the Day 2 workshop, participants would be able to experience the process of improving people's behavior by actually analyzing them with data gathered using a device provided by Waber. To be honest, this seemed like so much fun that choosing one workshop to attend became even more difficult...

Deepening "The Design of Experience" While Experimenting at the Three Workshops

On the day of, participants gathered at the Loftwork Inc. building in Dogensaka, Shibuya. Once there, they chose their workshops, which began at 2 p.m.

At the "FabCafe" on the 1st floor, Toshiki Isogai, Section Manager of Denso Corporation's Technology Planning Department, presented the workshop "Value Design of the Future." The theme was "Food." It included a tasting of fresh vegetables dipped in a specially made sauce, making this a learning venue for the palate as well.

At the "FabCafe MTRL" on the 2nd floor, Hiroshi Moribe, Product Planning Headquarters Manager for NEC Corporation, facilitated "The Next Gen UI." The framework involved thinking of new products which use all five senses freely. Participants formed teams, brainstormed ideas, then presented them.

At the "Loftwork COOOP" on the 10th floor, there was "Changing the Way You Move By Analyzing Behavioral Data," presented by Ben Waber, CEO of Humanyze; exponent of People Analytics; and author of the book "People Analytics: How Social Sensing Technology Will Transform Business and What It Tells Us about the Future of Work." Participants split into teams of five or six people, then made conjectures based on data from statistics on behavioral patterns. The workshop created a space for people to smooth out human relationships, increase productivity, and think up solutions to problems together.

Participants chose from the above three workshops. The most popular was "Changing the Way You Move By Analyzing Behavioral Data," which I attended myself. The seats were filled to capacity with 50 participants. The room was hot with enthusiasm! Koichi Morita, who had spoken the previous day, also participated. At this and the other workshops, I spotted a few attendees from abroad. There was a wide range of nationalities, genders, and ages, making the atmosphere greatly conducive to participation. With that, I would like to invite you to read the reports from the Loftworkers who participated at each workshop.

After racking our brains to a pulp in the workshops, the remaining participants had a mixer. Everyone from the three different spaces gathered in one place. It was time to relax our minds after sorting through so much wisdom. Videos taken the same day were screened right away as participants exchanged self-introductions and enjoyed good conversations over a light meal. It was a day full of dialogue between people with a mutual interest in data and design.
